Simona Halep suffered a heavy defeat in her return to the tour after four months, falling 1-6, 1-6 to Lucia Bronzetti. The former world No. 1 continues to struggle in her comeback following the doping ban that kept her out of competition for 18 months (after an initial four-year suspension was reduced).

This was only the third WTA level tournament for the two-time Grand Slam champion since her suspension. Currently ranked world No. 870, Halep has been forced to withdraw from several events due to injuries. This time, playing in front of her home crowd, she had the full support of the fans but failed to deliver a strong performance.

Bronzetti took control early in the first set, breaking Halep in the opening game to go 2-0 up within minutes. The Romanian managed to hold serve just once in the third game, but from there, Bronzetti remained dominant, winning 16 of the next 18 points to take the set 6-1 in just 28 minutes.

Halep struggled with consistency, committing frequent unforced errors and struggling in longer rallies. She won just 31% of her first-serve points and 33% on her second serve, making things easy for the world No. 72 Italian.

In the second set, Halep refused to give up but showed clear signs of rust. She had a break opportunity early in the set but squandered it with an unforced error at the net. Bronzetti quickly took control again, racing to a 3-0 lead.

Halep managed to stop an eight-game losing streak by holding serve and cutting the deficit to 1-3. However, she couldn't put up much resistance, and Bronzetti remained in command to close out the match 6-1, 6-2 in just over an hour.

The Italian will face the winner of Varvara Gracheva vs. third seed Peyton Stearns in the second round.
