Iga Swiatek had a peculiar moment at the press conference after her victory against Madison Keys in the
Madrid Open quarterfinals. The 5-time Grand Slam champion was asked about comparisons between the ATP Tour and the WTA Tour, and the consistency of their top players.
In recent months, players like Aryna Sabalenka, Madison Keys, Mirra Andreeva, and Swiatek have consistently made deep runs in the most important tournaments, and have been dominant against lower-ranked opponents, something perhaps not as common in previous years, when upsets abounded in the WTA.
Precisely, Swiatek defeated world No. 5 Madison Keys 0-6, 6-3, 6-2 and advanced to the semifinals of the Madrid Open, where she is the defending champion. She will face world No. 4 Coco Gauff for a place in the final. Five of the top 8 seeds reached the quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, in the ATP, there were no top-5 players in the quarterfinals, and only Jack Draper (No. 6) secured his spot in the quarterfinals [with the match between Alex de Minaur (No. 7) and Lorenzo Musetti (No. 11) still to be decided].
“People say the ATP Tour is becoming more and more like the WTA Tour. I think they mean it in a negative way,” the journalist commented to Swiatek. “What do you think about this comparison?” he added, noting the confusion of the 23-year-old Pole.
“I don't know what they mean. I have no… I need more details,” she replied. “I don't know, because last, I mean, Jannik [Sinner] and Carlos [Alcaraz] have been winning all the Grand Slams last years, you know,” added the former world No. 1, still with a doubtful tone.
After several seconds of confusion, Swiatek replied. “I don't think, I don't get it. I have no opinion then. I'm too stupid to answer that question,” she stated, in a curious moment experienced at the press conference.
