Following her first-round win at the
Cincinnati Open,
Petra Kvitova was congratulated on her wedding to coach Jiri Vanek last month, to which she replied by joking that the good wishes were 'more for [her] husband.'
Ninth seed Kvitova put on a dominant display in her opening match at the Western & Southern Open in Ohio, defeating Anna Blinkova in straight sets 7-6(2), 6-0.
During her on-court interview after the match, the Czech player was congratulated for the recent milestone in her personal life, before she went on to talk about her current level in the sport.
Kvitova celebrates milestone with a joke
"Since we last saw you, you've picked up a little bit of hardware, two titles and a wedding ring, congratulations Petra," the interviewer said.
"Thank you for the congratulations, it's more for my husband, but okay, thank you," she joked while laughing.
The two-time Grand Slam champion tied the knot with her husband last month. Vanek has coached Kvitova since 2016. In August 2021, they began dating and the couple then announced their engagement in July 2022.
The interviewer also asked Kvitova about how her happiness off the court shows in her game on the court.
"You are obviously happy off court and [its] translating on court but you're playing some of the better tennis of your career. I know you've said it's not about the ranking, but the ranking is showing up as well. What's made this year special?"
"I don't know, since around January, I've been a little bit playing better than last year. The body is sometimes falling apart, sometimes holding up better, so I'm just hoping for the best for my body," the 33-year-old said.
Kvitova will go on to face compatriot Linda Noskova in the Round of 32.
