Marketa Vondrousova is proving that her Olympic Games run was no fluke with another stellar victory over a top 20 player in Elena Rybakina.
Vondrousova faced a tough proposition at the VTB Kremlin Cup in Moscow today having to face Elena Rybakina on her preferred surface. The player from Kazakhstan plays her best tennis on hard and indoors her devastating serve can be something very hard to overcome. That was not a problem early on as Vondrousova broke Rybakina in her first two receiving games. She also lost her own serve thereafter so the score remained 2-2.
After that, both settled in nicely but it was Vondrousova who was playing better and finding angles. Rybakina never quite got the timing rade and many of her shots failed to have the devastating impact they usually have. At 4-4, she lost her serve which was enough for Marketa to win the opening set with 6-2. Rybakina only hit 56 % of her first serves and that was the problem. On 2nd serve, she was abysmal with 8/22 points won.
The 2nd set was a very similar set, somewhat unbelievably similar. Vondrousova was still the better player overall despite Rybakina having the lone early break point. At 4-4, the Czech player once again broke Rybakina before closing out the match with 6-4. The match featured a very bizarre stat line for Rybakina who posted the same number of aces and double faults in both sets.
She also hit her first serve at a 56 % rate which is identical to that stat in the first set as well. In the first set, she was 16/28 when hitting the first serve and in the 2nd she posted the exact same numbers (16/28). On 2nd serve, she was 8/22 which again matches her 1st set stat on 2nd serve. The only difference from the first to 2nd set is that she only faced one break point as opposed to 10 in the first set. Remarkable.
