The first ATP Tennis Tournament in Nur-Sultan was held in 2020 with John Millman winning the singles tournament and Sander Gills and Joran Vliegen winning the doubles. After two successful editions in 2020 and 2021, the Astana Open in Kazakhstan became a permanent ATP Tour member that season.
From 2021, the tournament is carried out as a combined event, with a women’s tournament being played the week after the men’s (as part of the WTA Tour). That was the first time in history that an ATP and a WTA tournament has been held in Kazakhstan. The succes might be longlived thanks to the popularity of super star Elena Rybakina.
In 2022 it was staged as an ATP 500 event alongside the Rakuten Open in Tokyo.
Some of the players who have played in the Astana Open include Andrey Rublev, Hubert Hurkacz, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, and Marin Cilic.
In 2022, Novak Djokovic defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas to win the third edition of the Astana Open. It was Djokovic’s fourth tour-level title of the season and his 90th career tour-level title. Djokovic won 87% (33/38) of his first-serve points and did not face a break point during the match. The Serb hit 15 winners and committed only seven unforced errors. In 2024 the Astana Open changed its name to Almaty Open.
