Alex de Minaur captured his 6th career trophy in Atlanta by beating native Jenson Brooksby in the final 6-3 6-3.
The Australian is now 6-4 in finals and this is his 2nd triumph in Atlanta after he won his 2nd career trophy at the event in 2019. It was a tricky week for the Australian who played a couple of three sets matches having to come back last night against Ilya Ivashka as well. de Minaur is a known fighter and he never quits on a rally and that suited him really well this week.
Jenson Brooksby played in his maiden final but the American did not show too many nerves for such a young player. He was largely able to keep up with de Minaur despite showing moments of weakness at times. The first set was an interesting one where Brooksby missed some crucial chances. He was more sturdy on his serve but the only break point he faced was converted by de Minaur.
The Aussie got the opening set 6-3 which was a huge win for him as he was shakier overall. He faced two break points but saved both of them. The 2nd set opened with de Minaur taking the early break. He failed to hold his serve allowing Brooksby a chance to stay in the match. The American continued playing solid tennis but there was an obvious lack of consistency.
He tried to attack but committed far too many errors that cost him down the stretch. De Minaur was just a wall that could not be broken down as the young American paid the price of inexperience. Alex finished off the second with 6-3 to win the 2022 Atlanta Open. Congratulations.
