Serbia’s legendary tennis star
Novak Djokovic has revealed
that Australia’s
Nick Kyrgios is eying a return to the court for the
US Open.
The fourth and final Grand Slam of the year will be played from August 26 to
September 08, 2024, where players worldwide will showcase their talent
to secure the ultimate prize.
Kyrgios has been out of action for a long time because of a
fitness concern. It is for this reason that he missed the last seven
Grand Slams. The Canberra-born star is currently working as a pundit during Wimbledon 2024. Djokovic, who has been training with the former world number 12 in London, was recently quoted in a report in which he stated that Kyrgios told him that he might be returning to the court for the US Open.
"I can tell you yesterday when we practised, he [Kyrgios]
hit a really good serve, and he said, 'Well, I might come back at the US
Open'," said Djokovic. So I don't know if he was joking about it or not,
but let me tell you, he's hitting the ball as good as ever really. He's so
talented. He's so good with his tennis. I hope he can come back, personally,
and I think everyone in tennis hopes he can come back quickly, because we
definitely need him on the tour.''
Just before getting injured, Kyrgios was going through the
best phase of his professional career. Just months before getting injured, the
Australian tennis star played in his first and, till now only Grand Slam final
at Wimbledon, where he lost to Djokovic in a four-set clash with a score of 4–6,
6–3, 6–4, 7–6(7–3). Later that year, Kyrgios also played in the quarterfinal of
the US Open where he lost to Russia’s Karen Khachanov in a five-set contest
with a score of 7-5, 4-6, 7-5, 6-7, 6-4.
