Boris Becker could be set for a return to Wimbledon this summer with his UK ban for his conviction and deportation seemingly lifted at the end of 2024.
Becker was a popular figure on the BBC coverage of Wimbledon for many years until he was jailed for two and a half years in April 2022 for hiding £2.5million worth of assets and loans to avoid paying debts.
He was released from prison in December 2022 after serving eight months of his sentence and was deported from the UK. But this made work difficult for Becker not only in the UK afterwards with the legendary tennis star coaching Holger Rune.
But he couldn't get into certain countries having just been in prison. It comes as according to the Daily Mail, members of the press were told that Becker could not speak about his famous 1985 triumph at Wimbledon.
Reportedly he has signed an exclusive deal with a media company to reveal all about his 1985 title and as a result won't be speaking to others about his historic win at the age of 17. This caught out those in attendance at the Laureus Sports Awards last weekend who were told they couldn't ask about it despite the 40th anniversary incoming.
Becker who is usually known as an open book surprised those in attendance with this but there seems to now be a reason. In terms of his return to the UK, people who are deported after being convicted are allowed back in after a certain amount of time. The terms of this means he was allowed back in October 2024.
Now it is up to either the BBC or even ESPN both of whom show the major whether they work with him this year or whether the conviction means that he remains exiled. But given it is the 40th anniversary, it could see him yet make a return.
"Wimbledon has been my favourite tournament as a player, coach and commentator. It's unique, you can't compare it," he said last summer.
"I lived in Wimbledon a long time so I'm working hard with the authorities to have all the applications ready to be back for next year. We're working on 2025. It's a part of my life. It's in my DNA, you can't deny that.”
