Victoria Azarenka made history after losing out to Olga Danilovic in her opener at the
Madrid Open 4-6, 2-6 by becoming the last player born in the 1980's to leave the top 50. But she also had protestation similar to her compatriot
Aryna Sabalenka about a dodgy line call during her loss.
Azarenka lost to the rising Serbian ace Olga Danilovic in straight sets and took to social media in similar vein to Sabalenka albeit the latter soon deleted it afterwards while Vika did not. She shared a photo of the line call and let the fans decide.
The call was made against her as the line judge made the out call. This gave Danilovic the point. "This ball in or out ?" commented Azarenka. This comes days after Sabalenka's controversy which saw her grab her phone and take a photo during her Quarter-Final clash with Elise Mertens at the Stuttgart Open.
The call was given by the line judge and the original call was upheld even after protest by Sabalenka so she decided to take a photo in images that went viral on social media. In reality, it didn't matter a great deal as Sabalenka won every game from there on out so it was a good omen but she wouldn't have been thinking so at the time.
"I prefer to have the Hawk-Eye system than the referee, because sometimes referees can be very weak to go there (to check the mark) and confirm that they made mistake, so yeah, I prefer to have the Hawk-Eye system," said Sabalenka regarding the incident.
What are your thoughts? Leave a comment below. Is Azarenka correct to protest or is it merely just sour grapes in a losing effort?
She still remains in Madrid and is currently playing in doubles alongside Ashlyn Krueger where they will face Ekaterina Alexandrova and Peyton Stearns later today.
