Coco Gauff and Madison Keys are among a top American contingent who have moved through at the 2025 Madrid Open after wins over Ann Li and Anna Kalinskaya on Saturday afternoon.
Jessica Pegula, Emma Navarro, Sofia Kenin and Peyton Stearns who all still have to play could yet join them. After losing the opening two games, Gauff ran off eight straight easing to a 6-2, 6-3 victory over her fellow American.
The next test will be the Last 16. She has reached it twice before and has never got to the Quarter-Finals. This is alongside Wimbledon and the Miami Open. She now faces Belinda Bencic who took down Beatriz Haddad Maia in three sets a few hours after.
Gauff is well known for racing out of the blocks in her opening games and winning fairly comfortably and it has been a trait of her game since losing to Martina Trevisan at the 2020 French Open. Since then she has won all 29 of her matches against players ranked outside of the top 50.
While Keys saw off Anna Kalinskaya who defeated her in one of her returns to the tour in Charleston earlier this month. The Australian Open champion barely played after winning in Australia so hasn't put much of a run together but claimed a 7-5, 7-6(3) win over the Russian today.
Kalinskaya though will be kicking herself. She squandered three set points in the second set and it went to a tie-break. It saw Keys win six out of the last seven points in the tie-break and claim the win. She will face either Emma Navarro or Donna Vekic on Monday in a top tie.
Keys also made history as the third American to notch 100 plus match wins in WTA 1000 events after Serena and Venus Williams and also four aces to 124 overall with only Clara Tauson and Linda Noskova doing better.
