Alex de Minaur lost out in the final of the ABN AMRO Open in Rotterdam this past weekend for the second year in a row but why is it that he can play Carlos Alcaraz fairly successful but Jannik Sinner has a hoodoo over him.
Alcaraz sealed the title 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 in a tough battle while Sinner has a 10-0 Head to Head record against the Australian who is on the verge of the top five for the first time. While he has ascended to new heights in his career these past few months, De Minaur is yet able to beat the big names.
But Alcaraz is a fresh battle having played very minimal before this weekend and he said he can make him feel uncomfortable in comparison to Jannik Sinner which as the Head to Head suggests is a bit of a hellish task for the Australian. Two years of heartbreak in a row in Rotterdam for him but in reality, he leaves the Dutch city with a new high ranking and the tools seemingly to trouble at least one half of the top players on the planet.
"When I play Carlos, we always have very tough battles. It’s just about these matches going my way," the Australian stated after the Rotterdam final.
"It’s definitely a better matchup for me – playing Carlos. I feel, in ways, I can rush him a little bit; I can pin him and hurt him, and make his life uncomfortable.
"But I haven’t really managed to do that against Jannik yet, so tennis is all about matchups."
"A lot of people in the tennis world know this. It’s the fun thing about tennis that not because one guy is ranked at a certain level and the other guy is ranked at a certain level, the higher ranked is always going to win," the world No. 8 added.
