Carlos Alcaraz has had a superb few weeks but as has often been the case with the prodigious Spanish talent, he has also had some bad luck with injuries and could yet be a doubt for the Madrid Open which starts next Wednesday.
Alcaraz faced Holger Rune in the final of the Barcelona Open on Sunday and said afterwards that he felt something which prompted him to take a medical timeout. He wasn't the same upon making his return to the court.
Now it has emerged following his loss to Rune that he has taken the step to prove it either way as he will undergo an MRI scan on Monday to assess the severity of his injury.
The Spaniard struggled with his movement and couldn't keep pace with Rune who perhaps had the simplest run towards the title than he was expecting as Alcaraz just couldn't hit back. Rune won the second set 6-2 to clinch a maiden Barcelona Open title and his first at ATP 500 level.
Marca reported that it was his right leg adductor muscles that are the issue. Barcelona Open's official tournament doctor, Angel Ruiz Cotorro had a similar assessment on court to that as he said it was an issue with the adductor in the right thigh.
"It's been two weeks of nonstop play, and it's been a real challenge. Today wasn't possible, but I gave everything I had. I don't know if I could have pushed myself any harder," said Alcaraz after but in reality perhaps he was hampered by this to the point that it could've been a different story had it not turned out like this.
But that is of course what sport is about and is the cruel part of it. Madrid will hope that he will take his spot, the draw is early morning on Monday meaning that it would be a withdrawal before he is due to play over before the draw. It would be a big blow though for the first year without Rafael Nadal to lose their main star.
