Carlos Alcaraz made a triumphant debut at the Monte Carlo Masters 1000, rallying from a set down to defeat the tricky Francisco Cerúndolo in convincing fashion, 3-6, 6-0, 6-1.
The opening set was far from ideal for the Spaniard. Despite breaking Cerúndolo early, Alcaraz was plagued by a slew of unforced errors off both wings, allowing the Argentine to wrest control of the match. Cerúndolo broke twice in succession, surging ahead to 5-2 before sealing the set 6-3, outscoring Alcaraz 29-20 in total points. The Spaniard’s serve, a lingering concern from recent tournaments, once again lacked bite and failed to trouble his opponent — a far cry from the dominance Alcaraz typically displays on clay.
The second set didn’t begin on a much brighter note. Alcaraz appeared uncertain, and Cerúndolo earned an early break point. But a perfectly executed volley denied the Argentine and seemed to shift the momentum. Alcaraz held serve and never looked back.
That moment of brilliance sparked a remarkable turnaround. Alcaraz broke Cerúndolo in the following game to go up 2-0. Backed by deft drop shots and sheer grit, he saved two break points to extend the lead to 3-0. From there, the 20-year-old from El Palmar went into overdrive.
He broke Cerúndolo to love for a 4-0 lead, and despite some resistance, pushed it to 5-0. The Spaniard closed out the set with another break, this time again at love, securing a dominant 6-0 set and completely flipping the match on its head.
With momentum fully in his favor, Alcaraz took the early lead in the decider by winning his seventh consecutive game. Though Cerúndolo briefly halted the streak and leveled at 1-1, the Argentine was no longer able to match the intensity and shot-making of his opponent.
Alcaraz broke twice more, finishing off a resounding comeback and sealing the match with authority.
From a shaky start to a ruthless finish, Carlitos once again showcased the blend of resilience and brilliance that makes him one of the most electrifying talents in the sport.
