Emma Navarro is making her debut this week at the Stuttgart Open and in the race towards the Porsche she has made a superb start with the American racing past Beatriz Haddad Maia in quick succession 6-3, 6-0.

Navarro as a top player now will get automatic entry to a tournament like this which is usually a bit of a stacked affair of top names. The American though lives up to her billing. She is one of the only players in the field this week who has already ventured onto clay.

Albeit it was a different pressure with the Charleston Open being the home tournament of Navarro who has her father Ben as tournament director and lead sponsor. She fell to Amanda Anisimova who promptly hit a wall in the next round due to injury.

But she has been one of the best players on tour for a little while outside the top names. So it will be interesting to see how Navarro does this week. Next up will be Jelena Ostapenko.

She saw off Dayana Yastremska who had to retire. Jana Fett had seen off Donna Vekic who was left in floods of tears on court. But if Navarro wins the next game, it would stop the highly anticipated Swiatek v Ostapenko clash.

The story of the Navarro v Haddad Maia tie was as expected based on paper and form. Haddad Maia has been very poor for a while now and albeit is a top name on paper has barely won a game this year.

It was close in the opening first six or seven games before Navarro put her foot on the accelerator and sped away maybe in a Porsche at the end of the week but for now the match win. Haddad Maia sat at 2-12 in 2024 and this season is on a match losing streak of nine games. She was poor last week at Billie Jean King Cup so perhaps the writing was on the wall.
