Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff have led American tennis in recent years, both staying in the top 5 for a couple of seasons now and consistently being the highest-ranked American players. They also shone in doubles, where, thanks to multiple titles as a team, both reached world No. 1 in the category.

They were among the few players who managed to remain at the top level in both singles and doubles. Together, they won four titles – three of them WTA 1000 events – and reached the Roland Garros final as well as two other WTA 1000 finals, in addition to competing side by side at the WTA Finals in both 2022 and 2023.

They played doubles together during the first half of the season, with their last tournament as a team being Wimbledon, where they reached the quarter-finals and lost to top seeds Elise Mertens and Su-Wei Hsieh. Later in the season, they were seen playing with other partners – Gauff teaming up with players like Katerina Siniakova and Erin Routliffe, while Pegula played some events with Giuliana Olmos and Ashlyn Krueger.

However, the Gauff/Pegula pairing didn’t return. Their absence from the US Open doubles draw raised some eyebrows, with both players opting to prioritise their singles goals. "Coco and I played a lot together for a couple of years, we did great, had many good results, and really incredible memories," Pegula said in her recent press conference at the Stuttgart Open.

"At the same time, we were doing well in singles, so obviously, we didn't want to play doubles as much anymore," the current world No. 3 added. "The schedule becomes very, very tough. I have hardly played doubles this year, probably won't play any of the Grand Slams this year in that category."

"I don't think I will play any of the Grand Slams in doubles because the schedule is very tough. I always feel like eventually, I will have to retire or something like that. The schedule makes it hard, but I still love playing doubles when I can."

Pegula recently overtook Coco Gauff in the rankings to become the top-ranked American, trailing only Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek, who have dominated the Tour in recent years. Her consistency has paid off – she recently won the WTA 500 Charleston Open and reached the final of the Miami Open, with 10 wins in her last 11 matches.
