Former Serena Williams’ coach Rennae Stubbs spoke about the aspect of Coco Gauff’s game that could remain a problem “going forward forever,” amid the American’s recent struggles on Tour. Gauff recently lost her position as American No. 1, dropping one spot to World No. 4, overtaken by Jessica Pegula.

The 21-year-old suffered some painful losses during her swing through Indian Wells. She reached the fourth round there, but lost to Belinda Bencic in a tournament where double faults became a clear problem, totalling 38 across three matches: 21 against Moyuka Uchijima, 9 against Maria Sakkari, and 8 against Bencic.

Those problems persisted at the Miami Open, where she was knocked out in the round of 16 by Magda Linette, hitting 12 double faults. Gauff’s serve was a focal point in the latest episode of Stubbs’ podcast, which she co-hosts with former world No. 9 Andrea Petkovic. The German asked Stubbs for her view on Gauff’s service motion during recent tournaments.

"Coco Gauff, a disappointing month for her in Indian Wells, in Miami. Did you see her service motion live? I just saw it on video. She served, for those who haven't maybe followed, she served 12 double faults in her straight sets loss against Magda,” commented Petkovic.

"I just, her grip is wrong. I think her elbow gets super low and sort of so close to her body. The left arm jumps down. There's so many little technical things that are going to be a problem for her going forward forever. Because it doesn't just go away. You know, Billie Jean King always said bad technique breaks down under pressure," claimed Stubbs
