Carlos Alcaraz saves match point to win crazy 5-hour match against Sinner at US Open

Jannik Sinner had a match point but the Spaniard was able to survive that and claim a huge win 6-3 6-7(7) 6-7(0) 7-5 6-3 after 5 hours of battling.

They played twice already this year and both times Sinner was able to win the match. One was at Wimbledon while the other was in the Umag final and now the Italian added a hard court win over Alcaraz as well. It's quite an achievement considering how well Alcaraz has played this year but to be fair, it's nowhere near as good as it was earlier this year.

The opening set was an interesting one as Sinner dropped his serve to start to match but pulled it back relatively quickly. Alcaraz did not stop and added two more breaks to take it 6-3 behind 16 winners. The second set was quite a crucial one as Sinner took an early break and held it for a long time before dropping it when he served for the set.

Then he held from 0-40 down saving 4 set points in total to force a tiebreak where he outplayed Alcaraz 9-7. The Spaniard missed a huge chance here to go up 2-0. The 3rd set was another crazy one. Alcaraz had the early break 4-2 but Sinner battled back. Alcaraz then broke for the 6-5 lead but lost his serve to go into the tiebreak where Sinner once again proved better 7-0.

Sinner took an early lead 3-1 in the 4th but lost it not long after that. He took another lead and served for the match at 5-4 even having a match point but dropped that game to pull Alcaraz back. At this time they already played for four and half hours. The Spaniard closed out that set 7-5 to force a 5th one. Sinner was up early in that one but Alcaraz stunningly battled back to take the lead. He finished it off after 5 hours and 15 minutes as it finished at 02:50 in the morning local time.
