Novak Djokovic won through 6-3, 6-1 against Corentin Moutet on Friday at the
Rome Open. But it wasn't the main story, not even the Frenchman's phone going off was. It was a bottle falling from the top of the stands onto his head as he was signing autographs.
Djokovic fell to the floor and was carried away. The tournament later confirmed after reports of nausea and being taken to hospital that he was fine and it was an accident. The World No.1 stated that he would be back on Sunday. But it didn't stop the anger and also theories flying.
"Novak Djokovic on leaving the Central court at the end of his match was accidentally hit on the head by a water bottle while signing autographs to spectators. He underwent appropriate medication and has already left the Foro Italico to return to his hotel; his condition is not a cause for concern", the Management of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia announced.
Fans of Djokovic seemingly took to social media to vent their anger at the situation with some calling for action to be taken against the person involved and that he should be sued. As well as the tournament for allowing metal water bottles on site. Others also went into great detail into how the person's hand was angled and how he in reality couldn't have been going for an autograph as a result of this as well as theorising whether it was an accident.
Djokovic will return to face Alejandro Tabilo on Sunday but the theories continue to fly well into Saturday. It seems off the outset that it is accidental and that there is no cause for concern. But this will soon be ascertained properly before he faces the Chilean. An unfortunate and pretty shocking incident though to discern his return to action.
