Daria Kasatkina had a funny reaction when she saw the Australian flag next to her name. The world No. 12 made her Charleston Open debut on Wednesday, marking her first competition with her new flag displayed. The 27-year-old secured a comfortable 6-1, 6-1 victory over Lauren Davis.

Kasatkina grabbed headlines days earlier after announcing her nationality switch from Russian to Australian. The change was immediate in WTA broadcasts, and starting this week, Kasatkina officially appears in the WTA rankings – and at all tournaments – as an Australian player.

As she walked onto the court, the crowd gave her a warm reception when the announcer introduced her: "From Australia, Daria Kasatkina." The stadium erupted in applause, showing support for the former Charleston Open champion. Kasatkina smiled as she stepped onto the court, adding to the outpouring of support she had received on social media following her decision.

After her match against Davis, Kasatkina joined Tennis Channel’s set and was asked about her new nationality and whether competing under a different flag felt any different. The former world No. 8 had a hilariously candid response during the interview.

"Yesterday, I was watching Tennis Channel, they put the schedule for today, and my name was there with the flag, and I was like ‘Oh my god,’" Kasatkina said expressively, laughing. "So yeah, it was a really special moment to me," she added, returning to a more serious tone.

Earlier, during her on-court interview, Kasatkina had already acknowledged feeling different amid the anticipation of her nationality change. "I couldn't handle my smile, even though I was a bit stressed before the match," she said. "Stepping on court with the new status, with the new flag, it was quite stressful. I had this little baggage of nerves, and it always explodes as soon as you step on court. I'm happy I was able to handle that. It's been a tough couple of years, so I'm really happy to stand here and feel like that," she concluded.
