Coaching champ Darren Cahill guides fourth player to world No. 1 rank

With Jannik Sinner's rise to world No. 1, Darren Cahill has now successfully coached four players to the world No. 1, including Lleyton Hewitt, Andre Agassi, and Simona Halep. The Italian tennis star secured the ATP No. 1 ranking starting Monday after Novak Djokovic withdrew from the French Open.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion, Djokovic, had been experiencing physical discomfort during several matches and chose to withdraw from the tournament just before his quarter-final match against Casper Ruud. Meanwhile, Sinner advanced to the semi-finals by defeating Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets.

Australian coach Darren Cahill joined Sinner’s team in June 2022, following a stint with Amanda Anisimova in the WTA. Cahill teamed up with Simone Vagnozzi, who was already working with Sinner, and together they won the Coach of the Year award at the 2023 ATP Awards.

Cahill’s influence has been instrumental in Sinner's development over the past two years, solidifying his reputation for nurturing top talent. In 2001, he helped Lleyton Hewitt become the second youngest player to reach world No. 1 at age 20 and guided him to his first Grand Slam title at the US Open.

Two years later, Cahill played a crucial role in Andre Agassi's ascent to No. 1, making Agassi the oldest player ever to hold the top ranking and helping him win the 2003 Australian Open. After Agassi’s retirement in 2006, Cahill continued to work with high-profile players including Andy Murray, Ana Ivanovic, Fernando Verdasco, Daniela Hantuchová, and Sorana Cîrstea, before teaming up with Simona Halep.

Halep had been a top contender for years but needed that extra push, which Cahill provided in 2017. She became the first Romanian woman to reach No. 1 and maintained the position for two years, winning two Grand Slam titles along the way.

Now with Sinner, Cahill has elevated the young Italian to a top-10 player and overseen his remarkable growth over the past two years. Sinner is set to become the 29th player to achieve the world No. 1 ranking in the Open Era.

The French Open journey continues for Sinner, who awaits the winner of the match between Carlos Alcaraz (No. 3) and Stefanos Tsitsipas (No. 9) in the semi-finals.
