David Ferrer has turned his focus on coaching and so far his partnership with Zverev has been fruitful yet this year's Roland Garros will be his first time sitting in his protegee's box.
Alexander Zverev will for the first time in his career have his coach sitting in his box as David Ferrer made his way to Paris to attended a familiar event in the Roland Garros but in a different role than he is used to. Speaking on that he jokingly said:
“Now you guys will have to tell me how to get to Centre Court because every time I’ve come here it’s been to play, I don’t know how to get to the stands.”
It's a new experience for Ferrer who is still a new face amongst the coaches and he spoke about the adjustment by saying:
“It’s different. Now I have the numbers of the rest of the coaches, but when you’ve been on Tour you know how everything works. You adapt to the player, to their schedule. Now I reserve courts for training, organise the transport, the racquets, I watch his opponents’ matches... what my coaches used to do back then, routine things.
Zverev will be looking to try and replicate some of the success he enjoyed in America even if the end result was not the ideal. Speaking about his chances and this event Ferrer gave a positive response:
“He’s very good on clay. He’s won in Madrid and Rome, his game is in good shape to do well on clay. He’s from Hamburg, and he’s more than used to clay. I’m very positive and I’m confident. I think he can do very well at Roland Garros."
It will be interesting to see how far Zverev can go especially since he will have watchful eyes looking on from his box for the first time in his carer.
