Greece’s tennis star
Stefanos Tsitsipas has revealed that he
is looking to play world number one
Jannik Sinner and Serbia’s
Novak Djokovic more
this year. The 26-year-old was once regarded as the next big thing but has
failed to deliver consistent results, especially in the recent past.
Tsitsipas has been recently quoted in a report where he highlighted
an interesting goal this year. The Athens-born star stated that one of his wishes
is to play in the reigning world number one Sinner and Serbia’s legendary
tennis star Djokovic more this year. Tsitsipas also stated that if he manages
to achieve that, it will mean that he is going towards the latter stages of the
competition.
“I really hope Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic,” he said. “I
mean, these two, if I’m able to get a consistent rivalry with those two, that
definitely shows that good things are happening for me. I have this belief that
the more I play Jannik [Sinner], and Novak [Djokovic], during a year that’s
actually a good problem to have and that shows that I’m going deep into the
draws, and that’s definitely something that I would wish for myself.”
Tsitsipas’ wish is interesting, considering his record
against both players. Against Sinner, the 26-year-old has a fabulous record, winning six times and losing just three times. On the other hand, against Djokovic, Tsitsipas' record is nothing short of a disaster, as he has
only won twice in 14 meetings and suffered just 12 defeats.
Tsitsipas has had a disastrous start to his 2025 campaign.
He participated in the Australian Open, where he was knocked out in the first round after losing to Alex Michelsen with a score of 7-5, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. His last appearance was in the Qatar Open, where he was once again knocked out
after losing in the first round to Hamad Medjedovic with a score of 7-6, 5-7,
7-6.
