Djokovic moves into fifth place on Open Era wins list

After a calculated victory over Mats Moraing on Tuesday at the Belgrade Open, Novak Djokovic added another record to his resume as he moved up to fifth all-time on the ATP match wins list in the Open Era.

The World No.1 overcame Moraing with a 6-2 7-6(4) victory to move advance to the quarterfinals, but the bigger story was the Serbian tying Guillermo Vilas with 951 tour-level wins.

"I'm thankful for that," Djokovic said after the match. "Obviously that also inspires me more to keep going. It's not my main priority, but it comes as a consequence of all the quality work and all the results that I have had over the years. I'll try to reach even the further places on the ranking ahead of me with wins in the years to come."

"With this win I managed to put my name in another history record book. Obviously being in the same conversation with Vilas and the legends and greats of our game, it makes me really fulfilled and very joyful."

The top seed faces Federico Coria in the quarterfinals, and a victory will ensure he stands alone at fifth place. He still trails rival Rafael Nadal, who is ranked fourth on this list with 1,022 tour-level match wins. Furthermore, although Djokovic has never faced Federico on the tour, he has battled the Argentine's elder brother, Guillermo Coria four times (2-2).

"How he walks, he reminds me a lot of his older brother on the court," Djokovic said of the younger Coria. "He's a fighter like his brother and doesn't give up, not even one point. He's got that spirit of fighting and making sure that the player beats him rather than he beats himself. And he loves to play on clay, this is his preferred surface."
