The Davis Cup series between Brazil and France ended the first day with a tense moment between world No. 20 Arthur Fils and No. 97 Thiago Seyboth Wild after the second match of the series. The French lead 2-0 following a tense day at home.
The Europeans opted for indoor hardcourt courts to face the South Americans. In the first match of the day, Ugo Humbert (No. 15) overcame teenage sensation Joao Fonseca (No. 99) in a tough match, winning 7-5, 6-3, to give France the first point of the series.
In the second match, 20-year-old Arthur Fils lived up to his favor, defeating Seyboth Wild (No 76) by 6-1, 6-4, to give France a 2-0 lead and put them in a good position to advance to the second round of qualifiers. The encounter became increasingly tense in the second set after a controversial point.
With the second set tied 4-4, Seyboth Wild was serving with a break point against him. During the rally, both players approached the net, and Fils hit a backhand that appeared to go long. The Brazilian almost hit the ball but pulled back his racket at the last moment, letting the ball go out.
However, the chair umpire called a 'touch,' meaning the ball had supposedly touched the Brazilian's racket, which gave Fils the crucial break to go ahead and eventually win the match with his serve. Seyboth Wild, known for his bad temper, made an outburst against the chair umpire and accused Fils of lacking fair play.
Once the match was over, Seyboth Wild aggressively approached Fils at the net, accusing him of unsportsmanlike conduct for winning the break. Brazilian captain Jaime Oncins also reprimanded Fils, leading to an intervention from the French coach and the chair umpire. Fils, visibly upset, approached the Brazilian for a conversation, and both players were quite agitated.
The series stands at 2-0 for France, and they will need just one win on Sunday to seal the deal and advance to the second round. The day will start with Benjamin Bonzi and Pierre-Hugues Herbert against Brazilian doubles players Rafael Matos and Marcelo Melo, a match that could potentially end the Brazilians’ hopes.
