Former world No. 8 Diego Schwartzman returned to the court at the Rosario Challenger, playing his penultimate tournament before retiring at the Argentina Open. The Argentine announced his retirement in mid-2024 and is hoping for a memorable farewell in front of his home crowd in Buenos Aires.

Schwartzman established himself among the world's best, finishing inside the top 20 from 2018 to 2021, with a career-high ranking of No. 8 in 2020. That year, he reached the Rome Open final, the Roland Garros semi-finals (both losses to Rafael Nadal), and the Paris Masters quarter-finals.

Despite standing at just 1.70m (5'7"), Schwartzman managed to compete at the highest level, particularly excelling on clay courts. The longtime leader of South American tennis retires at 32, after struggling with injuries that prevented him from returning to his best form in recent years.

In 2024, the Argentine took part in the clay swing and played his final Grand Slams. Although he fell in the qualifiers at the French Open and Wimbledon, he secured three consecutive wins at the US Open qualifiers to make the main draw for one final Grand Slam appearance.

Currently ranked No. 346, Schwartzman played his penultimate event at the Rosario Challenger, using the tournament as a final competitive test before his farewell at the Argentina Open. Unfortunately, he bowed out in three sets to fellow Argentine and No. 6 seed Camilo Ugo Carabelli (No. 110), 6-4, 3-6, 4-6.

Schwartzman will now play his final career tournament at the Argentina Open, which marks the start of the South American Golden Swing.

The Argentine concludes his career with four ATP titles, the most significant being the ATP 500 Rio Open. He also reached 10 finals, including the 2020 Italian Open against Novak Djokovic, where he lost in straight sets. Undoubtedly, Schwartzman was a player of his era, defying the sport’s increasing physicality despite his uncommon height for elite tennis.
