Lopez predicts the number of Grand Slams Sinner will win, placing him in the
top five of all time. The former Spanish player is impressed by the World No.
1's ability to "keep the bar high" and expects him to maintain his
exceptional level in the coming years.
World No. 1
Jannik Sinner had a historic season, finishing with 73 wins and only six
losses, claiming eight singles titles and leading Italy to a second consecutive
Davis Cup victory.
A future in the top-5 of all-time Slam champions?
Sinner
ended 2023 as one of the favourites for 2024, but he surpassed all
expectations. He began the year by securing his first Grand Slam title at the
Australian Open and added a second at the
US Open in August.
The
five-time Davis Cup champion spoke to Corriere Dello Sport about
Sinner's incredible season: “This year, he has had a season beyond all logic,
winning an unreal number of matches and, above all, losing only six over the
course of the season,” Lopez said.
“There is
no doubt he deserves to be No. 1 in the world. If there’s one thing more
impressive than the intensity of his tennis, it’s his ability to keep the bar
high. Everyone else has their ups and downs, but he doesn’t,” he added. “Two
years ago, he was a different player, and today he still wants to improve. I
can only imagine how he could play if he continues like this.”
Lopez was
also asked to predict how many Grand Slam titles the Italian might win during
his career. “It’s hard to say. I’m often asked about Alcaraz,” Lopez said.
“He’ll definitely be in double figures, let’s say 14.”
If Lopez is
correct, Sinner would reach a historic number that places him just behind the
Big Three: Novak Djokovic (24), Rafael Nadal (22), and Roger Federer (20). The
next on the list, Pete Sampras, holds 14 major titles between 1990 and 2002.
According to Lopez, Sinner could match this feat, potentially ranking him among
the top five players with the most Grand Slam titles in history.
