Former Roger Federer coach, Severin Luthi, spoke about Jannik Sinner's case with WADA and highlighted the 3-time Grand Slam champion's ability to manage his emotions amidst the controversy. The Italian is serving a 3-month suspension after accepting an agreement with the World Anti-Doping Agency.
Luthi, who also had a brief partnership with Holger Rune, acknowledged that there has been a shift in the era following the retirements of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Andy Murray, while Novak Djokovic’s final days on tour are also in sight. Although Djokovic is not yet thinking about retirement, it is inevitable, considering he will turn 38 in May.
The Sinner case has shaken the tennis world since the doping issue was made public in August 2024. The Italian managed to maintain his dominance on tour – despite knowing about the case since March of the same year.
"I admire Sinner for how he was able to mentally manage 2024 and the first months of 2025," Luthi commented. "He did it like a true number one. He is a player who deserves all the respect."
"I agree with those who say his case is far from doping. However, I prefer not to express an opinion about the decisions of the bodies that discussed the issue," he added.
"Perhaps Djokovic also has a point in expressing doubts and perplexities about how Sinner’s case was handled. There probably aren't clear regulations in place. But again, I prefer not to get into this delicate and difficult matter."
"Especially in the area of ointments and painkillers. In this regard, I like to remind that Roger himself always paid great attention to the prescription of medications throughout his career. Unfortunately, even simple distractions can be costly."
Sinner started his suspension on February 9, so he will return in May for the Italian Open. In the meantime, he will miss 4 Masters 1000 events, although the world No. 1 spot seems safe for now until his return.
