Son of the former world number one Lleyton Hewitt, Cruz
Hewitt, secured his first win at the
Australian Open. The first Grand Slam of
the year is moving towards the business end as remaining players are giving
their all to secure the ultimate prize. Like every year, one of the primary
purpose of such events is to bring new talent.
This year, it will be no different. The mega-event’s boys
and girls edition started on Saturday which featured the
Cruz Hewitt who is the
son of the two-time Grand Slam winner Lleyton Hewitt. The 16-year-old featured
in the round of 64 clash in Melbourne and outclassed his opponent MooBeen Kim
in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-3.
In the contest, Cruz produced five aces, four more than his opponent.
He registered 14 winners as well, eight more than Kim. Cruz converted three
break points in the match, but his opponent failed to win a single break
point. The youngster was far more impressive while returning the serve as he
won 26 return points, exactly double of what his opponent achieved in the contest.
Cruz also produced two backhand winners, which is often described as a very
difficult shot. The contest lasted just one hour and 14 minutes. His father was in the stands to cheer his son.
Cruz will now face top-ranked Czech Republic’s Jan Kumstat
in the round of 32 of the competition. The 18-year-old secured his spot in the next
round after beating America’s Maximus Dussault in straight sets with a score of
6-2, 6-2. Cruz recently also participated in the qualifying round of the seniors draw, where he lost to Nikoloz Basilashvili in straight sets with a score of 6-1, 6-4. Cruz hopes to make his father proud, who lifted two Grand Slam titles in senior tennis in his illustrious career.
