The 33-year old becomes just the third player to win the award for the first time. Norwegian Casper Ruud and Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz won the awards in 2022 and 2023.

Tennis greats Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal dominated the award from 2004 till 2021, with the Swiss Maestro winning it on 13 occasions whereas his Spanish rival was selected on five occasions. Swedish tennis star Stefan Edberg won the award five times between 1988 and 1995, with the honor named after him from 1996.

"I'm just very grateful, very thankful to all my fans, to all my colleagues, to everyone that has been such a support throughout all this time. I feel very fortunate," Dimitrov said in a special video to his peers and fans. "Thank you all for this amazing appreciation, and I'll make sure to keep on going and to keep on striving to be the best."
