The decision to temporarily suspend Jannik Sinner for his violation of a doping policy has been met with controversy, and former player Rennae Stubbs found herself coming to the Italian's defense following his appearance at a fashion event in Milan.

The World No.1 tested positive for prohibited substances last year at Indian Wells, leading to his eventual suspension after a lengthy legal battle. Sinner was not held responsible for the incident, but nonetheless, he was handed a three-month ban by the World Anti Doping Agency (WADA).

Sinner makes appearance at fashion event, causing fan backlash

The reigning Australian Open champion recently attended the Gucci Fashion Week show in Milan this week. Sinner is an ambassador for the fashion brand. and his appearance was acknowledged by the official Tennis Channel Twitter account, which posted the picture of the Italian at the event.

However, not everyone was pleased with him being promoted on the social media account, as a fan tried to point out how Sinner received preferential treament.

"One has to wonder if Halep, Sharapova or anyone else who has served a doping-related suspension has been promoted by some of the biggest accounts in tennis during that suspension," wrote the fan.

Rennae Stubbs, a former doubles No.1 and ex-coach of Serena Williams, got wind of the remark and replied to the fan, voicing her support for Sinner.

"Because he was cleared of any wrongdoing," Stubbs replied. "He is serving a suspension based on the incompetence of his team in the eyes of WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency). The players mentioned were subject to different suspensions."

Sinner's suspension will end in time for the 23-year old to compete at Roland Garros and Wimbledon this summer.
