Former World No.3
Stan Wawrinka powered through his opening round match at the 2023
Monte-Carlo Masters, and now has a date with in-form American
Taylor Fritz in the second round.
Wawrinka rallied back to defeat Tallon Griekspoor 5-7 6-3 6-4 on Monday, saving 9 of 11 break points before sealing victory on his sixth match point. Awaiting the three-time Grand Slam champion in the round of 32 is eighth seed Taylor Fritz, who had an opening-round bye.
"I think, the way he’s playing, he’s always going to be dangerous. So, I will have to play better than today,” Wawrinka said. “He’s an amazing player. He’s top 10. He’s been improving a lot, winning a lot of matches, winning a lot of tournaments. He’s really dangerous on any surface.”
Wawrinka is coming off a fourth-round exit at Indian Wells, where he pulled off a stunning upset over World No.9 Holger Rune. Additionally, the 38-year old has had a few noteworthy runs this year, reaching the quarterfinals of Rotterdam and the Open 13 earlier this year.
