Germany’s
Alexander Zverev is hopeful that his triumph at
the Munich Open will help him regain his lost form this season. The 28-year-old
is regarded as one of the best players currently playing in men’s tennis in the
singles category, along with the likes of Italy’s Jannik Sinner and Spain’s
Carlos Alcaraz.
Zverev is going through a mixed campaign this year. He
started the season brilliantly at the Australian Open, where he finished as the
runner-up after losing the final to Sinner in straight sets with a score of
6-3, 7-5, 6-3. However, after that, Zverev struggled to maintain consistency.
Before coming to Munich, Zverev managed to win just eight
matches in the singles category events in 14 outings since the Australian Open
final. That started to change as soon as he started playing in his own country, where he lifted the Munich Open on Sunday after beating America’s Ben Shelton
in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-4. During the whole competition,
the world number two lost just one set. Zverev has been quoted in a report by
Flashscore, where he expressed optimism that the recent result will help him return
to his best form in the near future.
"It's extremely special," said Zverev. I always
love winning tournaments in Germany. It's probably the most special thing that
I can do. It's definitely a great birthday present. I knew I had to play my
best tennis, Ben has been playing extremely well. This was one of the best
weeks you can have as a tennis player. I don't think we need to talk about the
last few weeks anymore. I'm just so happy with the title and with the level
that I managed to play at.”
Zverev also talked about his performance on the day and believes
that he managed to put his best foot forward against a tough opponent. “I
definitely knew I had to play my best tennis today, Ben has been playing
extremely well this week,” said Zverev as quoted by
ATP’s official website.
“The conditions suit him extremely well, it’s very hot and very fast. They suit
me as well, to be fair. I enjoyed my birthday so far.”
