Australia’s tennis star
Nick Kyrgios has admitted that he
was aware of the open letter from former cricketing great Shane Warne in 2015
but he never read it.
Warne, often regarded as the magician in the world of
cricket and is considered one of the all-time greats to have played the game,
wrote an open letter to the 28-year-old eight years back after his comments about
the girlfriend of the Swiss veteran tennis player Stan Wawrinka during the
Rogers Cup.
Kyrgios, while talking to famous British TV anchor and journalist Piers Morgan, admitted
that he was aware of the letter but never bothered to read it.
“I saw it and didn't read it,” he said. “But yeah, look, I
feel like I've been the closest Australian player in the last decade to win a
Grand Slam. I made the final. I've had a pretty successful career. I feel like
I've won a lot more than I've lost.
"Able to provide for my family, friends and yeah
respected by millions around the world, obviously. And yeah, I've done it my
way. At the end of the day, I know that there's other Australian athletes who
just wanted to see me succeed.
"I've only ever supported most of them as well and I've
only wanted the best for them. I've never, never going to be the first one to
go out on social media and put someone down. If someone does that to me, I'll
respond. But yeah, I look back at that letter and I look back at how far I've
come and I'd say he would be proud for sure.”
Warner passed away last year after being found dead inside
his hotel room in Thailand in March 2022. On the other hand, Kyrgios is currently
going through rehab after suffering from fitness concerns since last year.
