Carlos Alcaraz hit a wall of sorts during his Barcelona Open run with the Spaniard losing out to Holger Rune in the final of the 2025 tournament on Sunday albeit with an injury halfway through hampering him.
Comparisons to Rafael Nadal always follow him but Alcaraz marvelled at his ability to play multiple tournaments in a row and win them for the most part. He said it is so difficult and while he hasn't asked for advice, he has received encouragement from the legend.
Nadal will return to Roland Garros for his farewell ceremony next month with Alcaraz the current champion hoping for similar continued success on the surface albeit under no illusion he is unlikely to do what Nadal did.
“Having played so many matches without rest is what he had. I didn't think about that, but I did know it would be hard and demanding," said Alcaraz as per Relevo as he couldn't back up his Monte-Carlo triumph with Barcelona glory.
I had the faith of playing good tennis, which I think I have done. This is demanding, you must give your 100% every day.
Playing Monte Carlo and arriving in Barcelona with a few days is always complicated. I surrender to the feet of Rafa Nadal, which he did week after week. Something you have in your head of how difficult it is.
Rafa doesn't give me advice, he has written to me encouraging me, that he hopes it's nothing and that in Madrid I am at my best.
People, even me, although I play tennis and I know what it is, we admire him especially for this clay court. You value how difficult it is, winning it all in a row is impossible. And you give it more value when you live it in first person, it's a little crazy, yes.”
