Gael
Monfils proposed a tennis doubles exhibition, featuring himself with Elina
Svitolina,
Paula Badosa with
Stefanos Tsitsipas, and
Katie Boulter with Alex De
Minaur. During
Indian Wells, the Frenchman commented that it would be
interesting for fans to see a doubles event.
Just a week
ago, Boulter and De Minaur achieved simultaneous victories in less than 24
hours, with the Australian defending his title at the ATP 500 Acapulco Open and
the Briton claiming her first WTA 500 San Diego Open.
On the
other hand, the pairing of Paula Badosa and Stefanos Tsitsipas has caught the
public's attention, and despite not being in their best form, they remain among
the most talented players on the tour. Badosa was the champion of Indian Wells
in 2021 and is a former world No. 2, while Tsitsipas is a 3-time Grand Slam
finalist and former world No. 3.
Monfils and
Svitolina also boast multiple titles and have been part of the elite top-10
group, making the Frenchman's idea a potentially high-level exhibition:
"Actually,
to have a maybe an exhibition with all of us, you know. But, now the advice I
feel like Alex is, he is playing his best tennis, his life, you know, let's be
honest. He's top 10, I think he can achieve more, you know?" Monfils said.
"And
Katie just also she been battling with, a lot of injuries. And now she can
finally play back to back win her bigger title. So that's that's very good for
her. And And, of course, you know she can share with Alex. That's lovely. I'm
happy to see them," the former world No. 6 said.
"And,
of course, Steph and Paula, you know, it's great. You know, it's no rivalry.
Just love. And, but we should maybe do do something altogether, like, it would
be cool. Like, it can be like fun with fans, questions that you really know
your girlfriend or your wife. You know what I mean?" the Frenchman added.
