World number one Iga Swiatek struggled quite a bit in the second half against Niemeier but the Polish superstar was able to avoid going to three sets winning 6-4 7-5.
Expectedly, it was a very close match between the players. They played in New York and Swiatek had to play three sets in order to win and it nearly happened here as well. The start of the match was well-contested by both players. Swiatek was the one that had to save break points first as Niemeir played as bravely as ever.
She did that and eventually finished off the first set with 6-4 after some spectacular play in the final game of the set. Swiatek didn't serve well in the first set which was a shame for her because she dominated when she hit her first serve. She did most of her damage on the second serve of Niemeir which was expected.
The second set was a very exciting one as Niemeir took the first two games. She was able to hold that serve for pretty much the entire set arriving at 5-4 with the chance to send the match in the 3rd set. Unfortunately for those that wanted to see three sets, Niemeier was broken and she fell apart not long after that losing the set 7-5.
