America’s Taylor Fritz has decided to withdraw from the ATP 500 event in Acapulco. The competition is set to begin on February 24, where some top players in the world will participate to showcase their talent at the highest level.
World number four Fritz posted on Instagram that he will not take part in the competition because of an injury. The 2024 US Open runner-up stated that he recently played in the Dallas Open through injury.
“Really sad that I have to pull out of Acapulco this year. I’ve been dealing with an abdominal injury since the week before Dallas. I have been playing through the injury, hoping that it could get better because several parts of my game were and still are pain free. I’m at a point now where it has not improved and it’s frustrating to be playing when I know I can’t play 100% and am avoiding certain shots or just hitting shots differently then I normally would to avoid the pain. Acapulco has always been one of my favorite events and I’m really sorry to let the tournament down. I’m hoping that giving it this week to rest and rehab will get me back to 100% soon,” he wrote.
The latest event is a serious blow for Fritz, who has started the season slowly. He was knocked out of the Australian Open after losing in the third round to France’s Gael Monfils with a score of 3-6, 7-5, 7-6, 6-4. He then featured in the Dallas Open, where he was knocked out after losing in the second round to Canada’s Denis Shapovalov with a score of 2-6, 6-3, 7-6. Fritz’s most recent appearance came at the Delray Beach Open, where he was once again knocked out after losing in the second round to Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the final with a score of 7-6, 7-6.
