Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo has expressed happiness after delivering an upset win against the world number two, Alexander Zverev, in the Argentina Open. The 26-year-old registered a surprising win against one of the top players in the world in men’s tennis on Friday in the quarterfinal with a score of 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Interestingly, coming into the match, Cerundolo and Zverev had met only once before, which was in the round of 16 of the Madrid Masters last year, where Argentina’s tennis star came out on top as well, that too in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-4. Talking after the match, Cerundolo stated that he was happy to secure arguably the biggest win of his career, where he defeated the world number two. He also highlighted the importance of winning while playing in front of the home crowd and his family.

“I’m super happy,” he said. “It’s the best win of my career in terms of ranking. He’s world number two in the world playing incredible tennis. So to be able to beat him here in Buenos Aires with my home crowd, my family, my people, my friends. It’s amazing. Probably one of the best feelings I’ve ever had.”

Cerundolo will now face Spain’s Pedro Martinez in the last-four clash on Saturday. The 27-year-old secured his place in the semifinal of the competition after being awarded a walkover against Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti. This will be the third meeting between the two players in professional tennis. In the previous two meetings, both players emerged victorious on one occasion.

Their first-ever meeting at the highest level was back in 2022 in the round of 32 during the event at the Queen’s Club, where Cerundolo came out on top in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-2. Their most recent meeting was in the quarterfinal of the ATP event in Hamburg in 2024, where Martinez came out on top with a score of 1-6, 6-1, 6-4.
