Although
Novak Djokovic already holds the record for the most Grand Slam titles in the Open Era, adding another one to his resume could help take tennis to even greater heights, according to
Juan Martin del Potro.
The retired Argentine has shared the court with Djokovic on several occasions, notable defeating the Serbian in his quest for Olympic gold at the 2016 Games in Rio. However, their friendship has remained strong, as del Potro's final match before retirement came against Djokovic in an exhibition event last year.
Del Potro backs Djokovic to win another Major title
The Belgrade native currently has 24 Major titles to his name, but has failed to win a Grand Slam since the 2023 US Open. Djokovic has since shifted his focus from ATP events to Grand Slam tournaments, as he seems set on winning at least one more Major before he bids tennis goodbye.
In an interview at the 2024 Paris Olympics, del Potro expressed his belief in Djokovic winning another Major title. The 2009 US Open champion believes Djokovic will keep trying until he succeeds, just as he did before finally capturing the elusive Olympic gold medal in Paris.
"Winning a Grand Slam is something very personal for him, I believe,” said Del Potro. “I believe he can win more Slams. In tennis terms, he is the best. He has a lot of experience.
"If he can be in good physical shape, he will keep trying and possibly succeed. It would be a great thing for the world of tennis if he manages to win again after some time, as he did in Paris with the gold medal."
Djokovic's next opportunity to win a Grand Slam will come at Roland Garros, where he withdrew during his semifinal bout after sustaining a knee injury.
