Germany’s
Alexander Zverev is hoping to compete for the number-one spot in the ATP rankings in 2025. The 27-year-old is already ranked
amongst the best players in the world despite never winning a major title.
Zverev has been recently quoted in a report where she
expressed optimism in batting for the top spot in 2025. The 2024 French Open
runner-up was of the opinion that he has been in touching distance from
claiming the top spot in ATP rankings, and therefore, he will continue to push
for it in the upcoming season as well.
“I was one match away from world number one before the
injury," he said. "But I'm again competing for big events, the best
spots in our sport. I feared that I might not be able to do that again. I was
never sure to be back at this level. I've been close on multiple occasions for
a first Grand Slam title. But I want to stay healthy and fit, that is the main
goal.”
Zverev had an impressive outing on the court in 2024 as he finished
the season as the world number two. The Hamburg-born star finished the year
with 64 wins in 83 matches, second-most, only behind reigning world number one
Italy’s
Jannik Sinner. However, despite having a win percentage of more than 77 per cent, Zverev ended up winning just two ATP titles in 2024.
He first lifted the Rome Masters in May after beating Chile’s
Nicolas Jerry in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 7-5. Zverev
then went on to lift the Paris Masters in October after beating France’s Ugo
Humbert in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-2. Overall, Zverev
played in 21 competitions in 2024 and played in the semifinal or beyond in 16
of them. His last appearance came in the ATP Finals in Turin where his journey
came to an end in the semifinals stage after losing to America’s Taylor Fritz with
a score of 6-3, 3-6, 7-6.
