Australia’s
Alex de Minaur has admitted that he and his girlfriend
Katie Boulter are in a ‘tough situation’ as they will face each other
in the upcoming
United Cup. The team-based event starts on Friday and will be
played in two cities in Australia — Sydney and Perth. The tournament will feature
as many as 18 teams, divided into six groups of three teams each.
Australia and Great Britain are placed in Group F along with
Argentina. Their matches will be played in Sydney. The two teams will face off
in a mouthwatering contest on January 01, 2025, which might see De Minaur and his
girlfriend Boulter face each other in the doubles category. The reigning world
number nine in men’s tennis will be leading team Australi, whereas his girlfriend
will play for team Great Britain.
De Minaur has recently spoken to the English media outlet Daily Express, where he admitted that it would be a tough situation for him and his girlfriend if the two faced off in the doubles category. The 25-year-old further conceded that if he had the chance, he would rather play with
Boulter than against her.
“It’s a tough situation for both of us but we’re starting
very soon,” said De Minaur. “Not a lot of prep time. We’re going to be flying
to Australia together and prepping together, and hopefully we can play some
great tennis. If you look at my doubles record I’m like 0-10 in the last two
years so maybe I’m not the best doubles option considering that we’ve got Matt
Ebden who’s just won an Olympic gold medal and a Slam this year,” he smiled.
“So I think he might take my spot there. I would rather play with her as my
partner rather than against her, let’s put it like that.”
