Young Brazilian sensation
Joao Fonseca received a major
financial boost after his heroics in the
Australian Open. The 18-year-old is
already regarded as the one for the future and has already showcased his talent
at the highest level in the first Grand Slam of the year in 2025.
Fonseca caused one of the biggest upset in the competition
as he defeated world number nine Russia’s Andrey Rublev in straight sets with a
score of 7-6, 6-3, 7-6. It was his fourth win in the competition as he came
through to the main round after winning three matches in the qualifying round,
that too without losing a single set.
His journey, however, ended in the second round as he lost
to Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego in a five-set thriller with a score of 6-7, 6-3, 6-1,
3-6, 6-3. Those performances ensured that Fonseca took home about £102,000. As per
the latest report, the young tennis sensation is now set to receive a major boost
financially.
As per English media outlet Daily Express report, Fonseca is
set to receive £40,000 in the form of a grant from the Grand Slam Player
Development Programme. The program is backed by the International Tennis Federation
(ITF) and all four Grand Slams. He is one of the two players to receive the
funds. The other player is Xinran Sun from China.
Fonseca came into the Australian Open with a big reputation,
largely because of winning the NextGen Finals in Saudi Arabia in 2024. He
defeated America’s Learner Tien in the final with a score of 2-4, 4-3, 4-0,
4-2. Fonseca’s other big achievement is finishing as the runner-up in the
Australian Open boys doubles category in 2023. In that contest, he and his
partner Alexander Blockx lost to the pair of Tien and Cooper Williams in straight
sets with a score of 6-4, 6-4.
