The 2020 US Open resumed on Arthur Ashe stadium, as third seed Daniil Medvedev kicked off his campaign with an easy victory.
The 2019 runner-up faced Federico Delbonis in his opening match, and brushed past his opponent with a 6-1 6-2 6-4 victory. Medvedev raced to a 5-0 lead in the first set, before Delbonis was finally able to salvage a game. After clinching the first set, the Russian was in control for the entire match. He dictated play from the baseline, moving Delbonis around the court at will. Medvedev saved both break points faced, while capitalizing on five opportunities to break his opponent. After an hour and 44 minutes, the World No.5 finally secured his spot in the second round, where he'll face Australian Christopher O'Connell.
Sixth seed
Matteo Berrettini also booked his spot in the second round, outplaying
Go Soeda to prevail 7-6(5) 6-1 6-4. There were no breaks of serve in the first set, with Berrettini's poise allowing him to win the ensuing tiebreak. However, he employed a more aggressive strategy in the second set, breaking Soeda twice to lead 5-0. After some resistance by his Japanese counterpart, Berrettini sealed the second set to create an insurmountable lead. Although Soeda kept pace with last year's semifinalist, he eventually succumbed to the pressure at 4-4 in the final set. This enabled Berrettini to serve out the match and advance to the second round. He next faces
Ugo Humbert, who defeated
Yuichi Sugita 6-3 6-4 6-3 earlier in the day.
France's
Richard Gasquet beat Croatian veteran
Ivo Karlovic 7-6(0_ 7-6(4) 6-1 to advance to the second round. He will meet
Alex De Minaur, who defeated Slovak
Andrej Martin 6-4 6-3 7-5 in the first round.
