Former World No.1
Daniil Medvedev has had his trouble with clay, but the Russian may finally beginning to appreciate playing on the red dirt.
Medvedev is known for his love-hate relationship with clay-court tennis, giving several memorable quotes that showed his dislike for the surface. However, the 2021 US Open champion's luck may finally be improving, following his victory over Alexander Shevchenko at the ongoing 2023
Madrid Open.
Prior to the match, Medvedev had a losing record on clay, compiling a record of 9-10 on that particular surface. Furthermore, he was the just one of two top-10 players to have a losing overall record on clay. However, after his third round victory, the Russian finally accumulated a 50% record on the red dirt, and could add another victory to his tally if he gets past compatriot Aslan Karatsev in the fourth round.
