Toni Nadal won't be at Rafael Nadal's Davis Cup Finals farewell in a few weeks. But it isn't for the want of trying or for any emotional reason as he said that he is in fact working during that time so cannot attend.
Nadal spoke to Radio Marca and said that he has got used to the idea that Rafael Nadal, his great nephew won't play anymore and that while the emotion will be there, he knew it would happen eventually.
"I knew that at one time or another that day of final retirement would come," he told Radio Marca.
"Knowing that we will never see him in a competition again, the emotion will be there, but I have been getting used to the idea for some time now."
"I will miss it because I have work in those days and I have to be in Rome."
But whilst he won't be there in Rome, he said that he has seen him train at his Academy and that he is still playing at a high level. Albeit of course with the caveat that training is different to match practice.
He may not even play singles with doubles pencilled in if he can't play. He has not played since the Nordea Open in singles and the Olympic Games in doubles. He also played the Six Kings Slam this past month but otherwise has been edging towards retirement.
So his status is very much unknown when it comes to playing singles with David Ferrer saying recently that he is checking in on him everyday.
"I've seen him train these days and I've seen him train at a very high level," he said. "It's been a while since I've seen him train so well, but we have to wait and see because training is not the same as competing."

Imagine winning a grand slam tournament 14 times. Imagine winning every single final you played. Imagine never even going to a 5th set in ANY OF THEM. That is the legacy of Rafael Nadal Parera. 🇪🇸 👑
