The 2022 Wimbledon runner-up Nick Kyrgios is preparing for his return at the upcoming Brisbane International, a prelude to the Australian Open. The former world No. 13 appeared this week at the World Tennis League, marking his first event appearance since June 2023.

Kyrgios played mixed doubles with Jasmine Paolini and they defeated Caroline Garcia and Denis Shapovalov 7-5. Later, the Australian returned to the court to face Andrey Rublev but fell 4-6. The next day, he participated in the men's doubles alongside Casper Ruud, and they won against Sumit Nagal and Jordan Thompson 6-4.

Kyrgios eyes Brisbane return after injury setback

Over the past two years, Kyrgios has battled wrist and knee injuries that required surgery. He has only played one match in the last two seasons: at the Stuttgart Open against Yibing Wu in June 2023.

Just two weeks away from his return to the Tour, the 2022 Australian Open doubles champion shared an Instagram story with a message to the Tour regarding his comeback: "Wrist reconstruction ain't gonna end me."

Later, the Australian posted another story in which he reflected on his time in Abu Dhabi for the WTL: "Hey guys, NK here. My time in Abu Dhabi is almost up. Flying back to Australia. Just wanted to say that was an incredible couple of days, loved my team, played some incredible matches."

Kyrgios will play in Brisbane starting December 30, entering with his protected ranking (No. 21). It will be a tough draw, including Novak Djokovic, Grigor Dimitrov, and Holger Rune. The Aussie also recently announced he would play doubles with none other than 24-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic, which will be a great opportunity for both to gain momentum before the Australian Open.
