There is no such Australian Open hangover for
Jannik Sinner with the
Rotterdam Open being added to his collection in his first tournament back as a Grand Slam champion. It is a 12th career title for Sinner who saw off
Alex de Minaur 7-5, 6-4 to go 12-0 so far in 2024 after only playing his Grand Slam triumph prior to this week.
It is also a success that means Sinner will go to World Number Three next week instead of after Doha. This represents being the highest ranked Italian man in the history of the modern era as he usurps Daniil Medvedev who has decided not to play over the last two weeks despite being entered into Rotterdam and Doha.
Sinner took it in just over two hours with the first set in particular proving tricky as despite being on the end of his racquet at 5-4 up, he allowed De Minaur back into the tie on multiple occasions before he finally concluded the set.
After going 3-2 up with a break, he held onto that for most of the set until 5-4 when he dramatically lost his serve despite having four set points prior to that before it turned in the favour of De Minaur. Albeit after having the opportunity himself to go one away, the Aussie handed the serve straight back to Sinner who breezed past his service game to claim the set 7-5.
The second was characterised by a few breaks in a row with De Minaur losing his serve from a winning position at 2-2 as Sinner went 3-2 up, but lost his serve straight away and it went back in his favour in a pivotal break to go 4-3 up. Emphatic service holds followed between the pair before Sinner took the match meaning that the break in the latter half was a vital cog in the Italian's masterplan. He claims another title and another notch on his rise up the tennis pyramid both in ranking and his personal resume. Forza Jannik!
