Jannik Sinner elected to skip over the Olympic Games after the Italian endured a disappointing clay and grass season. Sinner noted that his decision was mainly motivated by his desire to get better as a player while there will be still time to represent Italy internationally.
While the decision was criticized it worked and Sinner looked very good against an in-form Ruusuvouri at the Citi Open. After the straight-sets win he said:
“It was not easy. We’ve had some great battles already, this time was the third [time I faced him]. He’s a very, very good player and a young guy. I’m happy about my performance today."
Sinner had no issues against Ruusuvoiru which might have to do that they've played several times already. They also play a very similar and aggressive style centred around their flat baseline shots. The similarities were noted by Sinner as well although he did not specify whether it helped or not:
“I was trying to play my game. I think we both have similar styles, we both play quite flat. I was trying to change direction [of the ball] earlier than him, and that worked well for me today.”
