Czech tennis superstars Kvitova and Pliskova played at the National Bank Open today and they had different outcomes. Pliskova proved better than Anisimova 6-1 7-6(8) while Kvitova lost to Giorgi 4-6 4-6. Pliskova was the first one to step out today facing a resurging Anisimova in Montreal. It was a one-sided affair early as Pliskova utterly dominate winning 6-1.
The 2nd set was much more competitive and much more interesting. Anisimova had a chance to go up early but failed to convert break points before losing her serve to give Pliskova the 3-1 lead. She broke back at 5-3 when Karolina served for the match but Pliskova closed it out with 10-8 in the tiebreak saving a set point in the process.
Joining her in the next round will not be her compatriot Kvitova who once again stumbled fairly early in an event. After a poor showing in Tokyo, Kvitova continued to struggle in Montreal losing to Giorgi. Admittedly the Italian player has played very well in Tokyo and continued to play that way in Canada.
Kvitova and Giorgi played a fairly close match but the Czech player was simply not good enough today. In key moments the Italian was able to produce better tennis and more winners. In the first set Kvitova lost both break points she faced which proved key.
In the 2nd set she allowed 9 total break points which was too much to overcome. Giorgio moves on with a well deserved win.
