Wimbledon has
released the schedule for the qualifying matches that will take place this
week, offering 16 spots in the main draw of the third Grand Slam of the year.
The qualifying phase, like the main draw, features 128 players, 32 of whom are
seeded. To qualify, players must win three consecutive matches.
Qualifying begins on Monday, June 24, and runs until June
27, with the qualifiers entering the main draw starting on July 1. Among the
players vying for a spot in the draw are young Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi
Perricard, the top seed, alongside rising stars like
Joao Fonseca and Hamad
Medjedovic.
Other more experienced players will also be seeking to
return to the main draw of the third Grand Slam of the year, including the 2-times semifinalist
Richard Gasquet, the former French Open semifinalist
Diego Schwartzman,
and 2022 Wimbledon quarterfinalist
Christian Garin.
The Wimbledon qualifiers often yield surprises; last year,
only four of the 32 seeded players in the qualifiers secured direct
qualification, while another four entered as lucky losers.
Players will compete in best-of-three-set matches during the
first two rounds of the qualifying phase, with the decisive match played in a
best-of-five-set format, similar to the main draw. Matches will begin at 11:00
am, with four matches played on each of the 16 courts designated for the
qualifying phase.
